MareNostrum Residential Building

MareNostrum

MareNostrum is an eight story residential building in Quito, Ecuador. The name refers to the Latin term for our sea, and the facade reinterprets the movement of the oars of Roman fleets. Santos House

Santos

Using wood as the main constructive element, the house displaces its two levels in section, generating a glazed roof to integrate with the context and allow natural light to enter. The double height space articulates that relationship between the ground floor, the upper floor and the landscape. A metal roof over the skylight flies, protecting it from the incidence of the western sun and formally rebuilding the volume, framing the vision of the natural environment. The program is articulated by locating public uses on the ground floor and private uses on the upper floor.

Stair House

Stair

This project challenges the residential design status quo, emphasizing the incorporation of environmental and cultural sustainability into its core principles. Through the reinterpretation of an existing typology, it expands the boundaries of what is possible within a narrow urban infill lot. The use of sustainable materials, deep planter guard rails, and covered outdoor patios encourage a connection with nature and cross-ventilation. The house is a reflection of how the relationship with nature and one another is evolving in the context of urban living.

Inside this house, where privacy is protected, a moderate sense of distance in the space visually connects the residents, creating an interior space that spreads diagonally.
